The day of the Metal Dog 庚戌 opens the gates to the main month of the year — the month of the Wood Horse 甲午. And for exactly one month, the Horse's self-punishment arrives.
The fire of this year reaches its peak. The Dog and the Horse meet, forming a semi-combination of fire — the air becomes dense, hot, alive.

The Horse is fire itself within the body — the fire that governs life and its transformation. Within the body's meridians, this fire manifests through four systems, ruling spirit, blood, and Qi.
When the fire is balanced, images are born easily in the heart, and the body receives food without resistance.
But when there is too much fire, it stops nourishing the Earth and begins to burn — emptying rather than filling.

This is why, during the month of the Wood Horse, sleep becomes thin as silk. The body awakens at the slightest rustle and becomes acutely sensitive to bitterness: bitter coffee, bitter herbs, bitter thoughts.
The Heart and the Small Intestine begin to vibrate subtly. Because the fire no longer burns steadily — it roars and devours itself.
This is the Horse's self-punishment.

Today I came across these words in the Guanzi:
"Do not run in place of the horse, or you will exhaust your strength.
Do not fly in place of the bird, or you will wear out your wings.
If you act first, you lose your position.
Be still, like a lotus untouched by the wind — and success will come to you spontaneously."

It so happens that the month of the Goat is tied to the harvest. And today we step not merely into what the Chinese call the "long summer," but into a time of reaping the fruits of Fire. I have already written that the Horse and the Goat form a glorious fiery pair—and today, the celestial configuration resembles a triad, led by the Goat, with the Horse of the year and the Horse of the day either assisting or obstructing it, forming in the final act that very Fire Punishment of the Horses. It will begin at dawn with three Horses, and as the gnomon's shadow stretches toward the Hour of the Rat, one of them will transform into a devilishly graceful being.
Zhuangzi once said that one cannot speak of ice to summer insects. What did he mean by that? It means that our experience is like that of a summer insect—born in summer and dying in summer: a person does not truly know the celestial cycles, and we merely pretend to understand them. Yet we can suppose that we have lived to see a time that will begin to reveal the results of accumulated karma—or, to put it more neutrally, the harvest has ripened, and now we shall receive what our labors over the year have earned. What makes this month exceptional is not merely that it is the local harvest of a single year, but a significant milestone—a reckoning at the peak of the Fire element within a great 180-year cycle. And this year, poised between the months of the Wood Goat and the Fire Goat of the coming year, will set many things in their proper place.
In our bodies, the Fire Earth associated with the heart corresponds to the pancreas, helping to enrich the blood with nutrients and govern the body's source of energy. The harvest is also a time of temptation—in food, the lure of sweetness; in life, the urge to squander recklessly (sell the grain and spend it all). For some, this is a time when hopes crumble, because every year we hope that the yield of our efforts will be no less than the year before—yet the measure is not always full. So prepare to accept what is offered, just as the earth receives and returns all things.

Today, on the day of Yin Water, the Metal of autumn takes hold. We are used to cold August nights and to the waning of the Fire element's intensity during the month of Shen (申). But this year, Fire rules supreme, and autumn begins with the Fire sign in the Heavenly Stem—as if two suns had risen above the mist-covered earth.
The Fire Monkey is a thought of the sun, swift as light itself. It is the celestial twin of the year's energy, its very reflection.
For the sign Shen (申) is, in truth, a manifestation of the divine within man; his spirit—Shen (神)—shares the same origin as the ninth earthly branch, Shen (申).
The large and small intestines—organs vibrating in resonance with the energy of August—decide what is nourishing and what must leave this world.
The resolve and ruthlessness of Yang Metal, in the first month of autumn, teach us to release what no longer serves us and to trust the current—just as Hanuman, the great Monkey God, is often depicted standing upon the cloud of the wind.
